The largest player in the electric car segment Tesla, has been hitting the headlines for quite a long time. This time, it is not about the business operation in India, it is about the disappointing sales figures in China. According to the data shared by China’s Passenger Car Association, Tesla has witnessed the lowest sales figures for the past five consecutive months on a year-on-year basis. The shipments plunged by over 49 percent in February from a year earlier. The number is considered the lowest figure since July 2022. Shanghai Factory Condition The reports suggested that Tesla’s factory, located on the outskirts of Shanghai, has some production linup, waiting to relaunch the popular Model Y with some nip and tuck updates. BYD over Tesla? There was a time, when the US-based EV maker retailed over 28,217 EVs in the covid times, taking the top spot in the industry. Now, it has been overshadowed by the leading car maker Build Your Dreams or BYD in terms of sales in the Chinese market. The latter has been putting efforts to attract more customers by levelling up their technology game. It is also localizing software tailored as per the domestic driving conditions. Sales Figures in International Market Meanwhile, China is not the only country that has reported a low sales number of Tesla models. Even in its homeland, the US, sales fell by 7 percent last year, followed by 2 percent drop in the first two months of 2025. The decline in sales figures continued in other international markets as well including Germany and France. This shows the fading charm of Tesla in the overseas market.
