The Celtic transfer masterplan laid bare as scouts zero in on 3 must have signings and Lennon Miller fee set to rise

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has already landed Kieran Tierney and now his next priority is revving up his midfield engine room for next season’s Champions League. The Hoops’ recruitment team have put out their current priority positions to strengthen their Treble-chasing squad. They currently have a central midfielder, central defensive midfielder and a right winger as most pressing. Rodgers has sorted their number one choice at left back because although Greg Taylor is leaving, bringing Tierney home from Arsenal as a free agent in the summer is great business. But more of that later. The Irishman has made it clear it is now all about quality rather than quantity. Quality that can make an impact in the Champions League . Celtic progressed through the group section before they narrowly lost to Bayern Munich in the knockout stages. That was the same approach he adopted last summer as Rodgers took control of the recruitment. He made a statement of intent by bringing in Adam Idah, Arne Engels, Luke McCowan, Auston Trusty, Paulo Bernardo and Kasper Schmeichel. The champions have been long-term admirers of Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller and will have another go on that front. It would take a deal of at least £4 million for the midfielder, who was recently called into the Scotland squad, but that could rise with growing interest and who else comes to the table. There is strong European interest in the teenager from the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt and Royal Union Saint Gilloise. Celtic still have Callum McGregor, Luke McCowan, Arne Engels, Hatate and Bernando. Rodgers is looking to add quality over quantity as he wants to strengthen Celtic’s domestic grip and try to make even more of an impact in the Champions League. There have been suggestions Hatate could be sold this summer as Celtic look to maximise his valuation. This will probably happen. But even without that happening, Celtic need to reinforce the midfield because of a number of factors. And one of them is captain McGregor has had his fair share of injury problems. Celtic have already been linked with a move for Augsburg’s defensive midfielder Elvis Rexhbecaj. Another area where Celtic remain open to strengthening is in the right wing area. Nicolas Kuhn has made that position his own this season. It is also likely to bring him to the attention of other clubs, with 18 goals and 14 assists, including some heroics in the Champions League. Hyun-jun Yang, who has impressed in spells this season, has been the main back-up for Kuhn. It all depends whether the South Korean can kick on between now and the summer as Celtic look to chase down another Treble. Celtic still have James Forrest but he turns 34 in the summer and is very much at the veteran stage. Tierney will fill the left-back slot left by Taylor’s pending summer, when his current contract expires. Jeffrey Schlupp is currently on-loan from Crystal Palace. Croatian side Dinamo Zagreb are pushing to get a deal done for Taylor but he also has interest from Major League Soccer. If a deal can be agreed then surely it would make sense for Celtic to sign Jeffrey Schlupp on a permanent basis. The Ghana international is currently enjoying a successful loan spell with the Hoops. He has already proven his worth domestically and has also shown up where it really matters for Celtic, in the Champions League. Schlupp has said he would be keen to discuss a permanent deal but it all comes down to salary. Rodgers response was: “I bet he would. Thirty-two (years of age), coming here, coming to Glasgow. "It’s something between now and the end of the season we will look at but I don’t want to commit too early. “But honestly, he’s a great boy. I knew what I was getting. I know his type. He’s a good guy, but more than a good guy, he can perform and play. I think there’s more to come.” Yes, Celtic are bringing Tierney but with Taylor set to leave then it would leave Celtic with one recognised left-back. Yes, he is 32 but would it not be an option for a year or so? It will all come down to wages. Schlupp’s deal with Palace is up in the summer but Celtic are not covering all his current wage. It all comes down to whether Schlupp was to drop his demands or if he sees this summer as one final big payday. Celtic have a number of players out on loan and there will be decisions on their futures when they return. Luis Palma is at Olympiacos, Odin Thiago Holm is at Los Angeles FC, Stephen Welsh is at KV Mechelen. Melbourne City have Marco Tilio and Gustaf Lagerbielke at Dutch side Twente FC. In short, Celtic face a busy summer.
