The 'harmless' car insurance loophole that could land you with a criminal record
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Parents trying to help their children onto the Midlands' roads could end up with a criminal record unless they take care with insurance arrangements. Price comparison websites are a convenient way of examining prices for covering new drivers - especially given the often eye-watering costs of premiums for teenagers who have yet to build up any no claims bonus. But mum and dads who enter their own details as the main driver on sites like Go Compare and Compare the Market, with their children added only as named drivers, risk committing fraud if they then take out a policy but use the car less than their kids. Comparison websites offer customers the facility to click through to the insurer offering the cheapest quote and the driver details already inputted are carried through. It can lead to substantially reduced premiums when compared with a newly-qualified driver being named as the main driver. But the main driver should be the individual who uses the car the most. The practice is known as 'fronting' and those who do it risk having the insurance policy concerned invalidated and being prosecuted for fraud. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) reports that 72,600 sneaky motor insurance claims were unveiled in 2022, adding up to £1.1 billion in value. Alicia Hempsted, a motor insurance specialist with MoneySuperMarket, said: "With insurance costs for young drivers reaching astronomical levels, it's understandable that parents are looking for ways they can cut costs and help their children get on the road." But she said what could be seen as a loophole to reduce premium costs could result in significant adverse impacts down the line. She urged families to instead consider legitimate alternatives such as shopping around, which could potentially save hundreds or even thousands of pounds annually. Named drivers should be those who use the car less frequently than the nominated main driver.
