Tour these Jackson County museums for free in May

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – Multiple Jackson County museums will welcome the public for free at this event. The 8th annual Jackson County Free Museum Day, hosted by Experience Jackson, will take place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 10. Some locations will host an open-house style reception and self-guided tours, while others feature food trucks, child-friendly activities and historic demonstrations. Many of these locations are only open for special events and private tours. This day will give guests an opportunity to experience multiple museums at their own pace throughout the day. “Our museums focus on everything from transportation to musical instruments, historical buildings, schoolhouses, log cabins and fine art,” VP of Marketing and Communications with Experience Jackson Rachel Buchanan said. “On this unique day, we welcome you to dive into the rich history and culture that Jackson County has to offer at these locations.” Here are the participating museums: Ella Sharp Museum Address: 3225 Fourth St. in Jackson People can enjoy the museum’s galleries, historic Farmlane, a show in the Hurst Planetarium and a tour through the Hillside Farmhouse. Exhibits on display include the Andrews Gallery of Wildlife Art, Woman Made: Stories of Impact, Behind the Block: Piecing Together the History of Quilting and Tyree Guyton: 40 Years in the Hood. Ella Sharp Museum will offer face painting, free popcorn and Jackson Reads – A program giving away free books to children who visit. Ye Ole Carriage Shop Museum Address: 3538 Henderson Road in Spring Arbor The museum will offer guided tours and activities for children. People can expect to find Jackson-made automobiles, a Coca-Cola Museum, classic cars, boxed toys, pedal cars and a retro kitchen. Conklin Reed Organ & History Museum and Heritage Park Address: 121 Tefft St. in Hanover The Conklin Museum hosts 100 fully restored antique organs, which can be played and admired. People can take guided tours through the 1911 school building with exhibits showcasing unique paintings, an early 1900’s classroom, a printing press, typewriters and an exhibit featuring a 1930’s household with a kitchen, living room, dining room, children’s toy room and bedroom. In the museum yard, there will be activities for the children, flower planting with the Hanover-Horton Garden Club and a food truck will be on-site. People may also enjoy a wagon ride to Heritage Park. Michigan’s Military Heritage Museum Address: 311 N. Wisner St. in Jackson During Free Museum Day, Michigan’s Military Heritage Museum will host a book and yard sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be hundreds of used books, as well as collectibles, household items, tools and furniture. Tompkins Historical Stewart Farm Museum Address: 10138 Tompkins Road in Rives Junction Tompkins Historical Stewart Farm Museum will offer tours of the museum, schoolhouse and log cabin. Tractor pulls and a Tompkins Plant Sale will also take place on site at the Stewart Farm Museum. Jackson College Heritage Center Address: 2111 Emmons Road in Jackson The Heritage Center at Jackson College will offer a viewing of its many projects on Free Museum Day. College staff and students donate their time to collect and share the stories of Jacksonians whose courage shaped American history, including Second Lt. Theodore Roosevelt Stiger. Related: Forgotten Jackson WWII hero, Tuskegee airman honored thanks to student research Cambridge Junction Historic State Park and Walker Tavern Historic Site Address: 13220 M-50 in Brooklyn Guests can enjoy a self-guided tour of the Visitor Center and Tavern. The Friends of Walker Tavern will be selling root beer and giving out free samples. This location is a state park through the Department of Natural Resources and may require a recreation passport. Grass Lake Area Historical Society & Coe House Museum Address: 371 W. Michigan Ave. in Grass Lake Tours of the Coe House Museum and grounds will be available. People can also check out the historical home, archives room, vintage pictures of Grass Lake and a replica of the Interurban Wait Station. Grass Lake Area Historical Society will also be conducting a pop-up fabric sale on May 10 to be held at the Coe House Museum. Lost Railway Museum Address: 142 W. Michigan Ave. in Grass Lake Take a self-guided, audio and live docent tour of the many transportation displays. People can also take a ride on the virtual Boland Express. Waterloo Farm Museum and Dewey School Museum Address: 13493 Waterloo Munith Road and 11501 Territorial Road in Grass Lake Tour the Waterloo Farm Museum, Dewey School Museum and outbuildings on Free Museum Day. Concessions and free musical entertainment will also be available. Guests can also watch the blacksmith work in the shop, make an arrowhead at the Flint knapping circle, shop the Spinner’s Flock fiber market and pick up some new greenery at the community plant sale. Hubbard Memorial Museum Foundation Address: 317 Hanover St. in Concord Museum day activities through the Hubbard Memorial Museum Foundation include three locations in Concord. There will be light refreshments and tours of the Greek Revival Paddock Hubbard House Museum, a pre-civil war home. The neighboring 1850’s Riceville One Room School will display historical learning setting. The First Universalist Church of Concord will host musical performances along with a tour of the building. The Mann House Address: 205 Hanover St. in Concord Guided tours are available at this historic home that illustrates typical family life in the 1880s.
