Twins’ Carlos Correa, Byron Buxton placed in concussion protocol after scary collision

There was a scary moment during Thursday’s game between the Twins and the Orioles.
Minnesota outfielder Byron Buxton collided with infielder Carlos Correa on a weak fly ball to shallow center field in the third inning of their game at Camden Yards.
Buxton and Correa bumped heads as they crashed into each other, but the outfielder was able to hold onto the ball to make the play.
Both players were immediately evaluated by trainers after the collision, with Correa exiting the game following the play and being replaced by Jonah Bride.
Buxton was able to stay in the game briefly, but he ultimately left the game in the fourth inning and was replaced by Ty France.
Buxton and Correa both placed in the concussion protocol after the game.
“It’s one of those fly balls that’s kind of right in the middle of both of them,” Twins acting manager Jayce Tingler told reporters. “And both of them going at it hard, and, you know, pretty good crowd today, with a bunch of people screaming, tough to communicate, and they obviously collided and banged heads.”
“You’re concerned anytime players kind of bang heads or have a head collision,” Tingler added. “I think the whole thing took six, seven minutes. And it’s a scary situation. … Buck obviously stayed in for the half-inning, and Carlos walked off on his own.”
The Twins ended up besting the Orioles 4-0 — for their 11th straight win — thanks to seven scoreless innings from starting pitcher Chris Paddack, who shared his sympathy for his two teammates.
“You got that scary play that happened with Buck and Los — hate seeing that. Hope that they can get right over the next couple days as they’re in the concussion protocol,” Paddack told reporters. “But you got [Kody] Clemens, [who] played three or four positions today.
“You got Ty [France] that’s coming into the game. You got Jonah [Bride] that’s coming into the game. So we went to battle today, and there were a lot of people that stepped up.”
