By 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, heavy rains lashed Kagoshima City, reducing visibility and rocking vehicles with strong winds. Reports of flooding and landslides surged across the prefecture. Around 6:30 p.m., a resident filming riverbanks described how the water overflowed, saying, "The river flooded, and water kept rushing in."
Even before the typhoon made landfall, heavy rains had already struck Kagoshima. In Satsumasendai City around 1 p.m., pedestrians struggled to hold umbrellas against downpours pounding the ground. Near Ichikikushikino City, roughly 120 millimeters of rain fell in one hour by 2:30 p.m., prompting a "record short-term heavy rain warning."
Because the typhoon is moving slowly, authorities cautioned that conditions could worsen significantly. Through the evening of August 22nd, a linear rainband may form, rapidly increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.
In Ichikikushikino City, three landslides have been reported behind houses, while two cases of floor-level flooding were confirmed. In Minamikyushu City, several homes suffered above-floor flooding, and in Minamisatsuma City, a woman in her 70s was hospitalized with suspected hypothermia.
Forecasts project up to 300 millimeters of rainfall in parts of the Satsuma region, and up to 200 millimeters in the Osumi, Tanegashima, and Yakushima areas within 24 hours through August 22nd. Officials urged residents to remain on alert for landslides, flooding, and other disasters.
