The US 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) arrived in Suva yesterday, marking the ship’s first return to Fiji since 1998. Officials say the visit highlights the continuation of 7th Fleet’s deepening security relationship with Fiji. USS Blue Ridge serves as the command ship for the largest forward-deployed fleet in the world. The ship’s primary mission is to provide operational control and planning in the Western Pacific and Indian Oceans while promoting regional stability and maritime security. “This is the first time in Fiji for many of our sailors and for me as well,” said Capt. Nicholas C. DeLeo, commanding officer of USS Blue Ridge. “We’re grateful for the warm welcome and excited to engage with our Fijian partners both professionally and in the community.” During the visit, sailors from Blue Ridge and 7th Fleet will participate in a series of community outreach events. Activities include volunteering at an animal shelter, playing a friendly basketball game with members of the Fijian military, and visiting a local school. Leadership from Blue Ridge and the 7th Fleet will also meet with senior officials from the Republic of Fiji Navy and local government leaders. These discussions are expected to deepen maritime cooperation and support shared goals for a free, open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. “We’ve worked side by side with Fiji for decades, including during World War II,” said Capt. DeLeo. “This visit is a chance to reinforce that partnership, support our mutual objectives, and strengthen our foundation for future collaboration.” The port call in Suva follows Blue Ridge’s recent operations in the Indo-Pacific, including a stop in New Caledonia. While the captain declined to confirm upcoming destinations, he noted the ship regularly operates across the Indo-Pacific as part of its role as a “port-de-coil” vessel, meaning it serves as a mobile command platform throughout the region. USS Blue Ridge is the oldest operational warship in the U.S. Navy, having served in the Indo-Pacific since 1979. The ship has a crew of about 650 sailors and, with the embarked 7th Fleet staff, carries over 1000 personnel in total. “It’s like a small city on board,” said Capt. DeLeo. “This vessel carries a lot of history and continues to play a key role in our engagement efforts across the Pacific.”
