Nobody could blame the field if they were surprised at the front-runner.
The new face brought a new challenge Tuesday to the Saginaw County Golf Invitational, snaring medalist honors.
Valley Lutheran freshman Reid Schisler made his first County Invitational a memorable one, edging Freeland junior Tristan Pohl for the top spot at Valley View Farm Golf Course.
Schisler, 15, birdied No. 15 to go 2-under par, then parred out to finish with a 2-under 69, one stroke ahead of Pohl, the defending County champion. Pohl led Freeland to the team title with a 304, edging Heritage at 305.
“Tristan finished first, but I don’t know if Reid was following his score,” Valley Lutheran coach John Mueller said. “But after Tristan finished, Reid’s last two approach shots were long, giving him long putts for birdie. He played it safe and parred both.”
Schisler, who is from Bay City, is a familiar face to youth golf fans in the state.
“Reis has been playing since he was a youngster … he’s played on the Meijer Junior Tour during the summer for years.
“He’s really talented. It’s my fifth year coaching golf at Valley, and he’s the most talented player I’ve seen, especially at his age.”
Rain changed how golfers approached the Valley View course.
“He’s a great ball-striker, and he knows his yardages really well,” Mueller said. “There were four or five holes where he stuck it within three or four feet. With the conditions today, that was really important.
“It was really wet. On all of his birdies, he stuck it within two to three feet.”
Heritage sophomore Michael Kahl was third at 74, with Freeland sophomore Samuel Roth and Heritage senior Brock Allardyce shooting 75s.
“He plays a lot of golf … he lives by the Bay City Country Club,” Mueller said. “This season, after practices, he’ll talk about playing some more. You can tell he plays a lot.
“All of my guys this year are like that. They all work at it. They all talk about golf. They all like it.”
