Star Indian batter Virat Kohli has broken Ricky Ponting's record of 27,483 runs in international cricket. With this, he has become the third-highest run-scorer across formats. He achieved the milestone during India's 2025 ICC Champions Trophy match against Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Kohli later completed his century and powered India to a six-wicket win over Pakistan. India chased down 242 to win the encounter. Kohli, who featured in his 547th international match today, required 81 runs to break Ponting's record. He accomplished the milestone on the last ball of the 36th over as India attempted to chase down 242. Since his international debut against Sri Lanka in Dambulla on August 18, 2008, Kohli has scored a staggering 9,230 runs in Tests and more than 14,000 runs in ODIs. He also retired from T20Is with 4,188 runs. Kohli overtook Ponting to become the third-highest run-scorer in international cricket. He now has 27,503 runs compared to Ponting's 27,483 across formats. Kohli is only behind Sachin Tendulkar (34,357) and Kumar Sangakkara (28,016). Apart from going past Ponting, Kohli also shattered Mohammad Azharuddin's record for the most catches by an Indian in ODIs. He now has 158 catches in his kitty from 299 matches, going past Azhar's record of 156 catches from 334 games. The legendary Mahela Jayawardene holds the world record with 218 catches from 448 matches. Ponting follows him with 160 catches in 375 ODIs. During his knock, Kohli also unlocked another significant achievement. With his 15th run, he completed 14,000 of those in ODI cricket. Kohli has become only the third player with this feat, joining Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara. Kohli is the fastest to 14,000 ODI runs (299 matches and 287 innings). The Indian batter is miles ahead of Tendulkar (350 innings) and Sangakkara (378 innings). Kohli raced to his 51st century in ODI cricket. It was his first ton since November 2023 when he smacked one against New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final. He has now become the first batter with more than 50 centuries in ODI cricket. Kohli also slammed his fourth ODI ton against Pakistan, the joint second-most by a batter.
