WILLIAMSTOWN — The pairing of Will Lord and Aarav Lavu saved their best for last on Saturday, finishing birdie-birdie to capture the 16-18-year-old age division in the fifth annual Jeff Polucci Memorial Junior 4-Ball Tournament at the Taconic Golf Club. Lord (Suffield, Conn.) and Lavu (Wellesley CC) finished at 6-under par 65 to edge two teams, the Brian Loughlin (Wenham)-Terry Manning (Danvers) duo and the pairing of Joey Moahan (Belmont CC) and Ben Ragosa (Winchester CC). The victory for Lord and Lavu made it back-to-back wins as partners in the Polucci Tournament with last year’s coming in the 14-15 age division. While visitors from eastern Massachusetts and Connecticut dominated the day, the host club did walk away with a victory as Ryley Regan and Reva Machanavajhula combined for an impressive 71 to win the girls’ division by five shots over Addi Regan and Lenox High School’s Mia Freeman. Meanwhile, Beck Bazile (Westport, Conn.) and Wyatt Rotchford (New Canan, Conn.) won a match of cards in the 13-15 age group against Brayden Grossman (Avon, Conn.) and Brayden Hutwagner (Prospect, Conn.) Both teams posted rounds of 3-under 68. In the 10-12 age division, Connor and William Lachance (Sterling) prevailed by two shots over Wesley Adamski (Southampton) and Michael Johnson with a 75. Lord and Lavu got off to a slow start but made up for that in a hurry. “We were 1-over after five holes, but then Will chipped in for a birdie,” said Lavu. “After that we made five birdies and an eagle.” The eagle came courtesy of the lanky, long-hitting Lord on the par-5 10th hole. “I hit the drive 340ish, then I hit an 8-iron from 160 yards to 20 feet and nailed the putt,” said Lord, who not surprisingly won the long drive competition on the 15th hole. By the time the duo reached their 17th hole — the par-5 18th — Lord and Lavu figured they needed a birdie, or perhaps two, to win. Getting to finish the round on a pair of par-5 holes, Nos. 18 and 1, proved to be a great break. “While we were on the course, we thought it would take 5-or 6-under to win so we thought we needed at least a couple of birdies,” Lord said. Mission accomplished with Lord chipping to within 2 feet to get the first birdie on 18. He then followed that up by hitting the first green in two and two-putting for the winning birdie. The field included two of Berkshire County’s top high school players with Mount Greylock’s Jacob Hillman and partner Ben Ragosa tying for sixth with a 69 and Lee High School’s Joey Abderhalden combining with Hoosac Valley's Zachary Mongeon for a 1-over 72. "That was fun," said Hillman, the son of Taconic head professional Josh Hillman. ”We ham-and-egged it well but we would have liked to have a few more putts fall." In the girls competition, not only did Regan and Machanavajhula finish first, but Regan also won the girls’ long-drive competition. Lenox’s Freeman beat all the boys and girls by winning the closest-to-the-pin (boys and girls) contest on No. 9, finishing inside 3 feet of the hole. The tournament is named after late Taconic member Jeff Polucci, a beloved member who was a big booster for junior golf and, according to head pro Hillman, who would have loved what he saw on Saturday at his beloved club. “Jeff would have appreciated all the excitement out here today with the closest-to-the-pin and long drive contest and a competitive tournament,” Hillman said during the awards ceremony.
