Ghana’s 100m national record holder, Benjamin Azamati, who smashed a 22-year-old record in March 2021 with a time of 9.97, has decided to forego the World Relays in Guangzhou, China, scheduled for May 10, 2025, to focus on preparing for the World Championships in September.
Bawa Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics, confirmed Azamati’s absence to JoySports, stating, “We have assembled our best athletes – for the World Relays, excluding Benjamin Azamati who has asked permission that he has got other things to do in preparing for the World Championships and we have given him that leave.”
Azamati, a key member of Ghana’s relay team that earned an automatic qualification for the World Relays at the Paris Olympics last year, will be replaced by Barnabas Aggerh, who competed at the African Games. Aggerh will join Ibrahim Fuseini, Joseph Paul Amoah, Sean Sarfo Antwi, and Mustapha Bokpin to form a strong squad.
Fuseini remains confident in the team’s potential, saying, “But we still have a very quality team; Fuseini, Joe Paul Amoah, Barnabas Aggerh, Sean Sarfo Antwi and they are a formidable team. We pray and we know that they will qualify for the World Championships come September this year.”
