Batter Matt Short and fast bowler Lance Morris are also out of the ODI series, with Morris suffering more “lower back soreness” in what could prove another big setback to his Ashes hopes.
Owen, who blasted his way to a half-century on T20 debut in the West Indies, was struck in the head by a delivery from South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada on Tuesday night.
The delivery slammed into the front grill of Owen’s helmet, and while he batted on and passed the on-field concussion assessment, he presented with delayed symptoms after being dismissed.
Owen will enter Cricket Australia’s concussion protocols, which have a minimum 12-day stand-down period, cruelling his hopes of a maiden ODI showing in the three matches in Cairns and Mackay that will follow the final T20 on Saturday.
Opener Short has not fully recovered from a side injury suffered during his preparation for the West Indies series.
He was sent home before the first game but will remain in Victoria to continue his rehabilitation with a view to starting his summer in next month’s domestic one-day competition.
Morris, who has been plagued by back and side issues, also reported lower back soreness while training with the Australians for the ODI series.
The 27-year-old, who has played three ODIs for Australia and been limited to just 27 first class games for Western Australia, has returned to Perth for further investigation and assessment, with a return to play not yet clear.
Aaron Hardie and Matthew Kuhnemann have come into the ODI squad.
