New cameras going up at Midlands M5 motorway junction as drivers face fines
@Source: birminghammail.co.uk
Drivers on the M5 motorway in the West Midlands have been warned new cameras will be going up to monitor rule-breaking. The cameras will be going up just off the motorway at the busy roundabout for Junction 1 in West Bromwich. It's part of new enforcement of yellow box junction rules at the busy A41 junction, used by thousands of drivers every day. Sandwell Council will begin punishing motorists who break yellow box rules after acquiring new traffic offence powers from the Government. These are the painted hashed yellow markings seen at busy locations like roundabouts and traffic lights. Vehicles must not enter them unless they can get through them without stopping as this causes congestion to build up. The rules have been the responsibility of the police but due to a lack of resources the areas are rarely monitored. Councils have now been invited to apply for the powers to punish motorists instead. The authority confirmed to BirminghamLive it was in the process of buying cameras for the busy junction to begin enforcement, which could begin later in the year or early next year. One of those is the yellow box junction on Junction 1 M5. “Acquiring these powers will allow Sandwell to continue to be more proactive in improving road safety, air quality, congestion, and network management. “We are currently in the process of buying the enforcement cameras for the six trial sites. "Applying for these powers puts Sandwell in line with all other West Midlands councils and in the meantime West Midlands Police still have concurrent powers in relation to enforcing moving traffic contraventions, including yellow boxes.”
