Tearful police officers proudly saluted “our Rosie…the conquering hero” as her coffin arrived at York Minster today. More than 800 people attended the funeral of PC Rosie Prior on Thursday to pay tribute to the “remarkable woman,” who died helping at a crash scene when she was off duty. Mourners were told Rosie was the 10th North Yorkshire Police officer to die in line of duty since the current force was formed in 1944 and had “placed the safety of the public before her own.” The mum-of-two died in a devastating collision along with the man she’d stopped to help on the morning of January 11th. The 45-year-old mum and Ryan Welford, 41, had been on the verge of the A19 at Bagby, North Yorkshire. Ms Prior and Mr Welford were both killed in the collision, while a teenage boy suffered serious injuries. Officers lined the final part of the route for the funeral cortege as it arrived at the Minster as the bells chimed out 45 times for every year of her life before she was carried inside. Her police hat was placed on top. Her dad, John Kinghorn, 76, told mourners how they had been “ best friends for 45 years” and told how she created a successful barista business but had ‘discovered her true vocation’ after joining the police. He said she would talk to anyone “prince or pauper” adding: “She absolutely loved the work. Unfortunately very few people actually know what is asked of our police force on a day-to-day basis. “After a difficult shift Rosie would call me hands free as she left Fulford Station, she would talk throughout the journey home..on arrival home …her voice would change…she had gone to see her boys. With a voice shaking with emotion he concluded: “Our forever conquering hero. Rosie.” Chief Constable Tim Forber quoted Rosie’s application form, which said; ‘I want a career where I feel challenged every day, get to give back to the community and have a positive impact’. There is no better motivation to become a police officer than this,” he told the congregation, explaining how she joined the force on May 22nd 2022 and went on to attend 800 incidents in the city of York. “Her kindness and her desire to help people extended way beyond the end of any shift,” he said. “Put simply it was her nature.” He told how she was a keen runner and “didn’t let anyone get away from her. On one occasion, Rosie had to chase after a young missing person who had run from the police on their arrival. Having caught her, the young girl in question pointed out that, ‘by now the police had normally stopped running’. To which Rosie replied, ‘I haven’t even started - I normally run 10 miles a day’." She encountered the girl a few times and went on to work with the girl by offering “empathy and understanding” he added. Talking about her bravery: “She was proud of the fact that she had never had to draw her baton, relying instead on her inherent ability to de-escalate situations.” He told how in one situation she put herself in the middle of two “rather large” drunk rugby players who were drunk and “Rosie brave as ever jumped straight in between them and said firmly ‘stop this now.’ "Like police officers the length and breadth of this country do every day, she placed the safety of the public before her own safety. In doing so, she acted in the finest traditions of the British police service." The police boss concluded: “Our Rosie, and that is how everybody in North Yorkshire Police now think of her, lived by her values and absolutely delivered the positive impact she desired on the communities she served. The city of York and the county of North Yorkshire owe her a debt of gratitude for her service.” He choked up as he read out her police number after promising: “We will also ensure, your memory, your contribution and your sacrifice are never ever forgotten.” The Reverend Canon Tim Goode told the congregation: “This morning we gather with hearts that are heavy…Rosie was a devoted wife to Chris, a loving mother, a cherished friend and respected and much loved colleague. Her kindness, courage and unwavering commitment to helping others affected the lives of so many. It should come as no surprise to us but I'm sure it would have come as a surprise to Rosie that this magnificent cathedral is full, packed full of people whose lives she touched and packed full of love for the person that Rosie was; courageous, fun, compassionate and all alongside that unwavering thirst she had for justice.” He described her as a “remarkable woman.” Ahead of her funeral her husband Chris thanked North Yorkshire Police and the Police Federation for their "amazing support during this horrific time. I would like to specifically mention our family support officers who have been fantastic. The amount of support we have received from family, friends, neighbours, work colleagues and Rosie’s work colleagues proves that even in the darkest of times, the world does have amazing people in it." He asks for time for the family and PC Prior's two boys to rebuild their lives after a "huge void" was left by her death. North Yorkshire Police Federation member, Martin Scott, who worked alongside Rosie in Acomb, York and said: “She was such a brilliant and bubbly person and a massive character. “She has left a massive hole within our shift.” Another colleague, Patrick Cairns, who was a pallbearer at her funeral, has said her sons would receive regular grants from the organisation until they were 25.He said of the funeral: "It's a time when policing can show solidarity and support for Rosie, honour her and respect her, and show that love and respect for Rosie's family." The man she helped, who also died, has been described as “a hardworking, selfless and caring person and would do anything he could to help anyone.” Ryan's funeral will take place in Harrogate on next Thursday at 11:40am. The HGV driver, a 65-year-old man from Berwick-upon-Tweed, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and later released under investigation.
